Mobile vs residential vs datacenter proxies: the complete 2026 buyer’s guide

Three proxy types, one decision, and a search results page full of people who sell mobile telling you mobile is best. Here is the honest version. The three types sit on a trust spectrum, platforms treat them very differently, and the right pick is the cheapest type that doesn’t get you blocked. Start with the table.

what each type actually is

A datacenter proxy is an IP that lives on a server in a hosting data center. It’s cheap because data centers are cheap, and it’s fast because the connection is a fat wired line. The catch is that the whole block of addresses belongs to a known hosting provider, and platforms have those blocks mapped. To a login page, it reads as “traffic from a server,” which is exactly what it is.

A residential proxy is a home IP borrowed from a real person’s connection, usually sourced through a peer pool: an app or sdk that pays or rewards people to share their bandwidth. The IP looks like a normal household, which is the appeal. The problem is what’s underneath: you don’t know how that consent was collected, the same IP gets reused across many buyers, and reliability swings because it’s someone’s home connection that can go offline mid request.

A mobile proxy is a real carrier IP on a real SIM card, behind carrier grade nat. It’s the address a normal phone gets on Singtel, M1, or StarHub. Because carriers put thousands of real subscribers behind each public IP, platforms can’t safely ban one without risking real customers, so mobile sits at the top of the trust spectrum. That’s the whole reason it exists.

Think of it as a line. Datacenter at the bottom, residential in the middle, mobile at the top. Platforms judge an IP on a few things: the asn reputation of the block it sits in, the history attached to that specific address, and how many real users plausibly share it.

Datacenter loses on all three. Residential improves the asn and history picture but suffers from pool reuse, so an address can already be “dirty” from another buyer before you touch it. Mobile wins because carrier nat means your IP is genuinely shared with real phones, and the carrier’s reputation is clean by default.

the cost reality

Per gb, datacenter is cheapest, residential is mid, and mobile is the most expensive by a wide margin. If you only look at that number, mobile looks absurd. But price per gb is the wrong lens for account work. You’re not buying bandwidth, you’re buying IPs that don’t get your accounts banned.

A datacenter proxy that’s cheap per gb and gets a fifty dollar account banned on day one is the expensive option. A mobile proxy that costs more but keeps the account alive for a year is the cheap one. Match the price model to the job: bandwidth jobs care about per gb, identity jobs care about survival.

when residential is actually fine

Plenty of jobs don’t need mobile. General web scraping where you mostly need to not look like a data center, light account work on forgiving platforms, price monitoring across normal sites, gathering public data at moderate scale. when datacenter is fine

Datacenter isn’t useless, it’s just narrow. It’s the right tool when the destination doesn’t care about IP reputation: your own infrastructure, internal apis, geo testing where you just need to appear in a region, raw speed work like load testing, or scraping sites that don’t fight back. For any of that, datacenter is faster and far cheaper, and reaching for mobile would be wasteful.

The rule is simple. If nothing is going to flag the IP, use the cheapest IP.

Now the part I’m biased about, with the reasoning so you can check it. For running believable accounts, automation at scale, ad verification, and scraping the hardest targets, mobile is the only type that holds up consistently.

Three reasons. First, the carrier nat trust I described means platforms can’t cheaply ban you. Second, mobile gives you one clean line per identity, so ten accounts don’t all share one exit address that ties them together. Third, you get real sticky versus rotating control, so a checkout or a login keeps one IP for the whole flow while other work spreads across many. One technical note that catches people regardless of tier. If you use socks5, use socks5h so dns resolves through the proxy and not your local machine. A dns leak undoes the whole point of the proxy by exposing your real resolver, and it happens on datacenter, residential, and mobile alike. The trust tier doesn’t save you from a misconfigured client.

Here’s the honest section. If you’re scraping public data off sites that don’t block hard, residential or even datacenter is the right buy and mobile is a waste of money.
